Folks were mostly in agreement over the Tiger Wood's incident as related in the article. Bravo to those who also commented on the writing itself. Rather than an article, here is more of a philosophical question to ponder:

If a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, does it make a sound?

(this actually ties into the last three blogs!)

85 comments:

  1. It does make a sound but no one hears it and eventually someone will see that the tree has fallen. Like if someone wants there voice heard like the food guy from the first blog or the guy who made marijuana legal to an extent or even tiger because the paparazi made it a sound if u will. but mostly if no one kows about it it didnt happen but with all three of these cases the world found out because people have sa9id somethin about it -

  2. This is Ian Steele-Avery, I say that it does in the literal way but not always in the figurative sense.

I wasn't quite sure if I was supposed to comment...so I did anyways.

  3. It makes a sound but no one hears it...
Just because no one is there to hear it, it doesn't mean that there is no sound...because that would be impossible.

    ReplyDelete
  4. Obviously it makes a sound. Sound waves are created. They are not being picked up by anything but they still exist.

  5. Ian you are a dumbass lol you are supposed to comment

    ReplyDelete
  6. This seems kind of like a riddle like all the other articles where one person who does an action there will be an uproar.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Technically, a sound is only a sound when sound waves are aurally received.(I'm quoting a physiology textbook.)

  8. Stephanie
No one that is human would hear the noise. In the incident of the tree in the woods falling down only animals would hear it.
This ties into the previous articles in that if something becomes out of place everyone say it most make noise in order to become out of place at some point in time.

  9. A tree does make a sound tho nobody hears it. Someone will see it when they find it or look around. But no one is going to actually look around for the tree if they dont know it fell, so they will find it some day.

    ReplyDelete
  10. obviously it's going to make a sound. even if no one is around to hear it there is going to be a sound. There is definitely a tie into the past three articles. There is going to be a sound and people may or may not react to it.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I agree with Joey! If nobody heard about it, most likely gossip isn't going to spread. To add on to that if someone snoops around and overhears something they are most likely to make it nation-wide known or expand it to something that it really isnt.

  12. Emily says:
yes it makes a sound but no one can hear it. but eventually someone who is walking by will see it and say something. especially in tigers case if no one had heard that he got in a car accident. the women he slept with wouldnt of come foward. and life would go on. but because the accident was made so public rumers started and things got carried away and thingds were turned into a bigger deal than they needed to be.

  13. I agree with Lin. there is definitely going to be an uproar with the noise that's been going on so far.

  14. Nastalsia said:

just becuase you didnt hear the tree doessnt mean that it didnt make a sound.the quote doesnt have to be a tree it could mean anything, its a metaphor for any situation. we dont live in NYC but people all across the US we effected by the twins towers.Just because an event didnt have any thing to do with you doesnt mean that you werent touched or effected by it.

  15. respond to suramirez:
I find very funny that you said no is actually going look for the tree but will find it someday. I agree with you though, the tree does make a sound but it depends where.

  16. If a tree is in a forest and it falls there is no doubt in my mind that it makes a sound. Its a tree, a tree is heavy, if it falls its gonna be loud. FACT.

    ReplyDelete
  17. i dont feel like thinking in deeply philosophical terms right now, but while one can be practical and closeminded (or lazy like me ;-p) and say that yes, it absolutley must make a sound, one can also ponder this one concept for hours and revel in the complexities of this seemingly simple little extended metaphor. but alas, lyla feels lazy lolz, so this is not currently going to happen :-)

    ReplyDelete
  18. Haha I like stephanies response. Stephanie your right about the animals only hearing it. Because animals are likely to surround the tree . Its nature and the environment and an animals habitat.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I agree with Melissa. The fallen tree is still going to be there and someone will eventually find it.
that is a good tie into all three of the previous articles because Tiger Woods held off being exposed for a long time but people eventually found out. also, the fat of America has caught up to use 40 years later.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Stephanie agrees with Emily: if tiger never got in the accident no one would have care about what he was doing in his spare time, just that he knows how to play golf.

  21. response to Nastalsia:

I agrre with you that this question is like a meatphore, it represents a different meaning than just the fallen tree making a sound.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Duh the tree makes a sound. Just because we didnt hear doensn't mean it didnt make sound. Tiger woods slept around (the Sound) his wife knows about it (she heard)but coincendently the whole world heard it too

    ReplyDelete
  23. I think it does make a sound and sound travels but noone will know it fell unless they come across it later on.

    ReplyDelete
  24. in respnse to justin,
not all trees are big and not all trees are heavy so, it doesnt always make a loud noise.

    ReplyDelete
  25. i agree with lvs..people react to certains and some just look at things with no reaction at all

    ReplyDelete
  26. I agree with Nastalsia
People are affected by things that are far away. Just because they weren't there to hear or see it doesn't mean that they didn't feel it's effects.

    ReplyDelete
  27. IM RESPONDING TO ZTHOREI. he made a good point i dont know if its true or not, but i happen to agree with it.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Ha zthoeri you are too funny but i agree with what you said

    ReplyDelete
  29. I agree with Salsa(Nastalsia) because the when a tree falls it makes a sound but it doesnt affect you until it actually happens.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I agree with stephanie because if a tree falls it will create sound waves which then will be recieved by the animals so it does make a noise,

    ReplyDelete
  31. I connect this to tiger woods personal life, even though hes doing all this and if no one knew about it, it would make an impact on his wife and family. He probebly not content if hes cheating on his wife.

    ReplyDelete
  32. i agree with suramirez...a sound there we just don't know..no one evers looks for something that they dont know is there or exist

    ReplyDelete
  33. Well of course the tree will make a sound. However noone's there to witness it. Therefor it is not looked upon as a problem. I mean the tree is not in the eye of the public, so noone can put anyone at fault on anyone or thing for it falling. I get how this would tie into the previous articles. Think if noone had been there to witness these events we've read articles on the past few days... would they have mattered or even come controversial if noone had been watching or seen them?

    ReplyDelete
  34. in response to nisha:
i agree with your comment, but it would be before she found out about him cheating. He cheated (the sound) but she didnt know, and no one else knew either (no one heard it) until his accident then all the girls tarted to come out ( some one came across the fallen tree)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Stephanie also agrees with Nastalsia it is a metaphor in order to make people think
Nice Lyla, being lazy or just make up some bs

    ReplyDelete
  36. I agree with Ivs. This quote relates to the Tiger story. His image as a perfect man fell but it only affected some people. If you come across the fallen tree you may or may not care about it.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I agree with amzies, it surely does seem that way.

    ReplyDelete
  38. think about all those little cute inoccent bugs being crushed by the tree! did someone hear them scream?! IT MAKES AN IMPACT ON SOMEONE
    !!!! ( lyla and felisa)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Amy- I do like the fact that it seems like a riddle also

    ReplyDelete
  40. That is soo true felisa

    ReplyDelete
  41. But in reality. A tree hitting the ground would create longitudinal waves in the air and transverse waves in the ground. As long as the waves are being created and could be heard by a organ, then sound is being created.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Yeah it does because regardless if people choose to acknowlege it or not it still happened. But then again it might depend on the size of the tree.

    ReplyDelete
  43. When a tree falls it makes a sound, even if no one hears it.
In relation to the Tiger Woods scandal, he's been cutting down tons of trees when no one was around by having sex with all these girls, and finially some one heard one of them and went to investigate the others.

    ReplyDelete
  44. in responce to ztheori and steph. ztheori the sound waves are not being recieved by humans but by the animals in nature. so someone will here it it just may be somone of the furry kind :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. Steph has a point haha

    ReplyDelete
  46. in response to red cherries - exactly!

    ReplyDelete
  47. awww...felisa-lisa did you check the bottom of your shoe, it doesnt take a huge tree to make that kind on impact on those cute bugs! lol

    ReplyDelete
  48. If a tree falls in a forest no one will hear it at all, but when more and more start to fall people will start to hear it but then it’s too late. Like the second blog no one will hear the voice or the one advocate for healthy food and life style but when you write book and hand out recipes people start to hear and the change is already happing and it’s too late to stop. As for the small ski town the first few trees have already fallen and now there is a choice to turn back or not because the law is still new. But lastly for tiger woods he is the finally tree that now everybody knows about. Now that the damage is already done in his case it’s too late but for many other people in the world there is still time.

    ReplyDelete
  49. In response to Steph and Emily - No one includes no animals. Don't assume it's only talking about people.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Wow em really "furry kind"... this is getting repetitive

    ReplyDelete
  51. i disagree with stephany because its not will humans hear so yes somthing animals. But you dont have to think of animals as animals but as the woman that nobody would listen to or the club bouncer who see all but says nothing.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Are some of you saying that sound is only validated through the human ear? Zthorei, you appear to know the science. But that begs a different question. Is there another paradigm besides that of western thought?

    ReplyDelete
  53. In response to Katy. (your response to Steph and Emily)
I was just going to say that. Also, the bugs wouldn't have been there either so that means they wouldn't have died

    ReplyDelete
  54. in responce to owen yes the sound is their and people hear it they just dont know how to understand it or just chose not to

    ReplyDelete
  55. yeah i agree with joe and denisha because most people are really just too lazy to go looking for it on their own.

    ReplyDelete
  56. i like Felisa's and Lylas comment. all those poor little bugs :'(

    ReplyDelete
  57. The science is that sound is a wave travelling through a solid liquid or gas. It is composed of frequencies concievable to what ever hearing organ it is stimulating. The waves are not dependent on the the organ recieving them

    ReplyDelete
  58. okay yeah it's definitely going to make a sound but I'm pretty sure this phrase has turned into more of a metaphor than just a physics question. like if something happens but no one sees it, did it really happen?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Oh yes obviously it does make a sound. If a fog horn goes off automatically and no one is around, is the fog horn silent now? I think not. Even though the sound traveled through the air but failed to reach anyone, it still makes a noise no one will ever hear.

    ReplyDelete
  60. This is a very deep statement. And yes the tree still does make a sound. Just because no one heard it it doesn't mean the tree never made a sound. I think this is very metaphorical statement, I love stuff like that.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Joe...shut your stanky smelly self up!
I didn't know and I wanted to have nothing to do in class. Plus, I'm not the one who forgot their password and was panicking in economics class about it...PUNK-AZZ!

    ReplyDelete
  62. In response to Tyler's comment, I totally agree. I think his response is very well thought out and I like how he connected the statement to the previous articles.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I agree with Tyler's first comment.

that is all I have to state at the current moment...

    ReplyDelete
  64. In connection to the Tiger Woods situation he's definitely chopped down some trees but he was so secretive about it no one heard the trees fall. Then one day he chopped down the wrong damn tree and it's sound echoed and now what was one in the dark has come to the light.
In connection to the weed being legal article, that's a tree that fell the sound wave just hit rochester.
In connection to the food article, I hear about that kind of stuff all the time. This was obtained it's uniqueness because the man had recipes and books.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Yea i mean it makes a sound and i'm sure it was heard by some creature, its in a forest... this is a silly question, but then again i'm not deeply analyzing it.

    ReplyDelete
  66. It does make a sound but nobody hears it. If the tree fell it's probably loud enough for some animal or creature to hear it. It's in the middle of the forest where any un-natural sound can be heard because forests are quiet.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I agree with sotastudentT..whoever that is..
about the connection between the tree falling and Tiger Woods. I think that's true that he "chopped down the wrong damn tree".

    ReplyDelete
  68. The tree makes a sound and it depends where you are in order to hear it. But someone/ something will always hear it.

    ReplyDelete
  69. the tree doesnt make a sound (the sensation produced by stimulation of the organs of hearing by vibrations) it just makes a noise no one can hear.

    ReplyDelete
  70. The tree can do whatever it wants as long as it doesn't fall on me.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Everything makes a sound, whether it's heard through human ears or not, its presence is known.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I believe that sound has to be heard for it to be sound. Because of this, if a forest falls in a forest with no living thing around it, it doesn't technically make a sound. Although it most likely does create waves that could become sound, it does not make a sound.

  73. I love what Harriett said! So true!

    ReplyDelete
  74. In response to Yanni, I believe that if there is in fact someone near the falling tree or a distance away that they could hear it, then the tree will make a sound. In the unlikely event that there is no living thing near the tree, then it will not.

    ReplyDelete
  75. it is very rare that a person will hear a tree fallen unless they see it falling. for example durring hurricane season in florida i witness a lot a trees falling and heard them also but thats the only time, so a falling tree can make a sound and you dont hear it.

    in response to zoe.....
i agree, this phrase can have several meanings, it just gives you alot to think about.

iagree with sotastudent all the way.

  76. This question asks people to respond and think in many different aspects creating many different answers. I will respond with one. From a technical aspect no it does not make a sound because sound is vibrations in the air. If there are no nerve endings from a human being or other creature to pick it up it isn't making a sound but simply untranslated vibrations in the air. From a less technical aspect this question is asking out

    ReplyDelete
  77. In response to Suzette:
Sounds are only created when vibrations are translated into sounds by a creature.

    ReplyDelete
  78. In response to Justin:
    There are small trees.

    ReplyDelete
  79. I believe the a tree will make a sound when it falls. Sound waves are created, no matter if we are there or not. Our ears pick up sound waves and thats how we hear things, its not the other way around. So a sound will be created we smply wont hear it.

    ReplyDelete
  80. I disagree with noah. It is a contradiction to say that sounds are made by vibrations in the air however without a human or creature to pick it up it is untranslated. If humans arnt there that doesnt mean air isnt there. the vibrations are being created we just arnt there to hear them for our selves. Nevertheless i agree that is a tricky question to answer.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Obviously the tree falling makes a noise. But this question is delving further into this concept. Its saying more if something happens and no one knows about it, did it really happen? Like Tiger Woods, his issues were personal within his own life. Even though none of the public was there for the incidents that occurred, we had no knowledge of what went on until they were leaked to the public. This is just like even if no one hears a tree fall, eventually someone will find the fallen tree in the woods and will know what happened.

    ReplyDelete
  82. I am confused with Jessicas comment. If a tree falls behind you that doesnt mean you dont hear it. How can you only hear something if you are looking at it?

    ReplyDelete
  83. I agree with Claire, after all humans are not the only ones with the ability to hear. What we hear are sound waves, which animals can also pick up. So once the tree falls even though we are not there physically it still made a noise.

    ReplyDelete
  84. I agree with Michelle. Tiger Woods fall from a perfect image, didn't affect everyone, only those who cared.
