Next assignment: As I said last week, you will write two interviews. The first was a classmate, while the second is someone you choose. As this point you should have the format down. Once again, prepare some questions and do some back ground reseach. A photo also would be nice. The length should be between 300-400 words. The interview itself is outside class work,but you may use classtime to actually write. The final date to turn in this interview is Thursday 17 December. I have something else in mind for Friday, so do not plan on class time to work on this.

IN CLASS WORK: Inserting quotes and correctly attributing them is intrinsic to good reporting. You have a packet labelled chapter 7- yes, this is correct; I'm using more than one text. Please carefully read the introductory material, then complete the 6 exercises for a grade. This too is due next Thursday, December 17.

And so we move on to your own interviews.

Your class interviews will be assigned randomly by number once everyone is here. Before actually conducting the interview, you should have a relatively narrow topic that you would like to pursue, not a general tell me about yourself. Perhaps you would like to focus on an aspect of childhood, hobby, future objectives, cultural traditions, a travel experience, views on almost anything. The point- as you saw yesterday- is to come to the table prepared. Take some classtime to do some research.

The actual interview: allow 15 minutes; choose your setting (you need a semblance of privacy); how are you taking notes? remember you need a quote. eye contact, body language; listen, listen, listen and give the speaker plenty of breathing space to fill in the silences.

Take a picture for the actual article, either with my camera or your phone, etc.

Due by the close of class on Monday.

This week we are going explore interview techniques, and, of course, you'll be writing a couple of your own.

Let's begin by taking a look at a couple of interviews. And what better way than Interview Magazine. (http://www.interviewmagazine.com/) Browse through the magazine and read one interview in depth.

By the end of the class on Monday, write 30- 50 words on why this was an effective interview. (What type of questions were used? How did the interviewer handle incomplete questions? What back ground material did the interviewer bring to the table?)
